Have you ever heard of "green hat" buddhists?

Only serious answers please. In Tibetan buddhism, there's the "yellow hat" tradition (among them the Gelug of the current Dalai Lama) and the "red hat" tradition (usually the Kagyu, Sakya and the Nyingma are considered to be "red hat"). Then an individual Buddhist leader like the Karmapa Kagyu is called the "black hat lama" because he wears a black crown.

No, I believe there are no "green hat lamas". I have studied Tibetan Buddhism for more than ten years with lamas from all main traditions, travelled in different Tibetan and Chinese areas, visited monasteries and seen ceremonies, read many books about Tibetan culture and the Tibetan monastic systems, and I never ever heard about "green hat lamas" or even seen lamas wear green hats in ceremonies.

Actually, the names "red hat lamas" and "yellow hat lamas" are usually not used by the Tibetans themselves, but have come to the West through Chinese descriptions of Tibet (just as the misleading word "lamaism", by the way). There are many different kinds of ceremonial or ritual hats used by the Tibetan monks and lamas for different ceremonies (so it's not like "one lama - one hat" or "one sect - one hat"), so maybe there are some rarely used green hats too, but no "sect" is mainly wearing green. Most hats are yellow or red, because that's the colours of the monks' robes.

Everything you write above about the hats is true, except that "yellow hats" usually refers only to the Gelug tradition, not to the Gelug "among others".
