American Literature! Help! 10 points to first one who helps!?
Ok, I need help on a writing prompt for my term paper. The Prompt asks
"How does the treatment of woman change throughout the centuries, and How does the role of woman change throughout the centuries".
Also, you must prove a point using
2 of these "books":
The Crucible by Arthur Miller
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Transcendentalists Essays (Nature, Walden, etc...)
Emily Dickenson poems
Edgar Allen Poe stories
And 2 of these books:
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Death of a salesman by Arthur Miller
Huck Finn by Mark Twain
Roman Fever by Edith Wharton
The Story of a Hour by Kate Chopin
Radio Golf by August WIlson
Your Help would be much appreciated. I will give you 10 points if you can help me out by giving an idea or something. (Even if you don't use all the books)
Isben's The Doll House is a classic on the treatment of women in literature. Nora is, indeed, treated like a doll. She is there for show only. She isn't thought capable of having a serious thought or discussion. She is her husband's plaything.
Contrast that to modern day stories, which often feature women as the hero. For example in the field of mystery writing, there are now female PIs, who actually solve murders!
So in literature, as in life, women have gone from being 'not quite adults' to taking the stage front and center and showing the self-determination and abilities that they have had all along, but that no one would let them display.
Christopher Carduff: "Hub Fans" Redux: John Updike, Ted Williams, and the Great American Essay
"The heart of fandom," John Updike once wrote, "is identification": that's my team at the top of the division, those are my guys chasing the pennant, and c'mon, let's face it, we're the best.
